Blake upsets Nadal in Masters Cup
SHANGHAI (AP) — James Blake had to wait in the locker room before his first Masters Cup appearance while Roger Federer was honored on the court for securing the year-end No. 1 ranking.
Then, while Federer was making champagne toasts and eating cake, Blake went out and extended his perfect record against No. 2-ranked Rafael Nadal.
That's one thing he has over Federer.
Blake, the eighth-ranked and last player to qualify for the Masters Cup, beat Nadal 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) Monday to improve to 3-0 against the 20-year-old Spaniard in ATP events.
He remains the only player in the elite eight-man field to have a winning record over Nadal.
"I'm never going to win a match against him playing really conservative," said Blake, describing his high-risk, low-percentage shotmaking options against Nadal.
"When it doesn't go in, it looks foolish and looks bad — I guess I have to suck up my ego and deal with that," Blake said. "Then when those go in, that's a lot of times the reason I'm winning matches because guys are then maybe scared of that shot or they don't know how to react."
So far, that tactic has not worked against Federer — Blake is 0-5 against him.
Federer opened his quest for a third Masters Cup title with a win Sunday over defending champion David Nalbandian. He plays Tuesday against Andy Roddick, who beat Ivan Ljubicic in his opener.
Federer is guaranteed the No. 1 ranking no matter where he finishes at the round-robin Masters Cup.
Russia's Nikolay Davydenko beat No. 6 Tommy Robredo 7-6 (10-8), 3-6, 6-1.
No. 3 Davydenko got the decisive break in the fourth game of the third set when Robredo had a double-fault at breakpoint.
Nadal also had a double-fault at a crucial juncture, giving Blake six match points in the tiebreaker.
The 26-year-old American only needed one of those, ripping a forehand winner down the line to cap an all-or-nothing performance.
After coming back from a break down to win the first set, Blake won only four points to start the second. He recovered from 0-4 and then had to break Nadal's serve at 5-4 to stay in the set.
"I'm the guy that's supposed to be the easy match in this tournament," Blake said, "which doesn't help my confidence much."
Yet it was his confidence to keep going for his shots that was key.
Asked his secret against Nadal, Blake did not offer much.
"I don't have any specific advice for any other players how to beat Nadal," he said. "People have been saying how big I was hitting the ball, but when you think about it, you really have to go for your shots."
Blake said the hardcourt surface also suited him more than it did Nadal, who is unparalleled on clay courts.
"I've been lucky enough to play him all three times on hard courts, which is definitely my favor more so than if I were to play him at the French Open," Blake said.
Nadal was returning from a stomach injury that forced him out of the recent Paris Masters. He said the neither the abdominal strain or missing match time had anything to do with his loss.
"James played very good points, very aggressive some points in the decisive moments, important moments," said Nadal. "But, if you are winning two breaks up and 5-4 ... and serving for the second set, you cannot lose the set, no?"
Blake qualified for the season-ending event after compiling his best season — 56-23 with five titles — and finishing in the Top 10 for the first time.
French Open champion Nadal was also making his first appearance and was 57-10 for the season heading into the Masters Cup. He qualified for the 2005 tournament but withdrew because of an injured left foot.
