A dogged and determined performance from the men in green saw off a very one dimensional Histon and allowed Rovers to notch up their fourth win on the bounce, thanks to a 20th minute strike by captain John Hardiker.
Not unexpectedly, this was not a pretty game for the 740 fans to watch but it did show how far Rovers have come in preparing for games and adapting their tactics to suit the opposition. Histon have performed well this season and their use of the direct route has served them well in recent weeks. However, the Rovers had done their homework and defended the aerial threat well with centre halves Hardiker and Jones in fine form, and goalkeeper Ryan Robinson dominating his six yard box.
It was not all defence though and Jim Harvey's men frequently cut their opponents apart with their slick passing game and, with better finishing, could easily have had a couple more. Despite missing the silky skills of Simon Clist in midfield, the centre of the park was often controlled by the ever improving Lee Fowler and in Andy Mangan, the Rovers had a willing workhorse up front. Ploughing the lone furrow at times, Andy had a couple of chances to increase the lead but unfortunately for him, his efforts went wide of the mark.
Not always a great match to watch but definitely a great performance to secure three points and take Forest Green Rovers to the top of the Blue Square Premier for the very first time.
