Ryman Premier League (17.11.2007 , 21:45 )
Hastings 1:3 Wimbledon
( 1:0 Scott Kirkwood 18` | 1:1 Mark De Bolla 35` | 1:2 Daniel Webb 68` | 1:3 Daniel Webb 79`)

Изображение

The Dons’ unbeaten run in the Ryman League Premier stretches back to 4 September but, although they eventually ran out 3-1 winners at Pilot Field, they were given a real battle by a spirited Hastings United who pressed all over the park. Scott Kirkwood put the hosts ahead on 18 minutes with the pick of the goals, before Wimbledon’s Mark De Bolla restored parity from the penalty spot. Target man Daniel Webb’s brace sealed the points in the second half as superior quality, fitness and determination told.

Terry Brown introduced new signing Jon Main into the starting eleven, replacing Steve Ferguson. Tony Finn shifted to the right wing and De Bolla surprisingly to the left as the manager experimented once again with 4-4-2. Danny Knowles made his first appearance in goal having joined on loan from Grays Athletic the previous day.

The visitors would work the first opening inside 5 minutes. Luke Garrard found Tony Finn on the right and the mercurial winger cut inside his marker and curled a low left-footer that shaved the post.

Hastings’ keeper Lee Worgan was in action a minute later palming away Jon Main’s snapshot from the edge of the six yard area.

It wasn’t long before Finn was in behind the home defence again, picking out Daniel Webb whose header drifted wide.

The hosts had their first attempt on ten minutes. Lee Carey tried his luck from range but Knowles saw it all the way. However, Carey’s effort galvanised the ‘Us’ and they were soon putting the Dons on the back foot.

Ade Olorunda nodded wide from a corner, before Kirkwood put Hastings in front with a superbly controlled volley on the run from twelve yards, following a fine cross from Danny Ellis.

The Dons were suddenly scrambling to make it a contest as Hastings worked hard to force errors out of their opponents and poured forward at every opportunity. They turned up the pressure with a succession of corners but were unable to engineer concrete opportunities for a second.

The Dons hauled themselves back into the game and Mark De Bolla should have equalised on 34 minutes, latching on to Finn’s cross but finding Worgan in good form again, parrying the midfielder’s shot low to his right.

It was new boy Jon Main who got the tide turning. He robbed Jimmy Elford inside the box but was crudely hauled down leaving the referee no choice but to award the spot kick. Although Main took the penalties at Tonbridge, De Bolla was given the chance to atone for his earlier miss and coolly despatched the dead ball past Worgan.

The former Ebbsfleet man nearly doubled his tally, conjuring another fine save from the Hastings stopper with a cheeky effort that was heading for the top corner.

Before the break, Main and Finn slipped De Bolla in for a one-on-one with Worgan but the number 10 dragged his shot well wide. It seemed a pivotal opportunity and Dons fans were starting to wonder whether it was going to be ‘another one of those afternoons’.

This feeling was compounded when the Wombles started the second period very sluggishly. Hastings striker Sam Adams was given several chances to shoot unmarked from the edge of the area with two soaring into the stand behind the goal and the other being scuffed wide with the Dons’ defence at sixes and sevens.

Jon Main, ever the danger, forced Worgan to make his save of the afternoon - a rifled drive towards the top left corner that the keeper magnificently turned around the post. De Bolla was next to warm the keeper’s hands, firing a direct free kick goalbound that needed strong hands and quick reflexes to keep it out.

Adams continued to cause problems for the Dons’ backline racing into the right hand channel but Knowles was alert to the danger, nicking the ball off the lively forward’s toes before he could get his shot away.

With the game opening up Antony Howard was then denied by a fine defensive block three yards out after the Hastings defence failed to deal with Garrard’s free kick from the centre circle.

But it was Webb who finally put the Dons ahead on 68 minutes. De Bolla and Main worked a short corner on the left which eventually found its way to substitute Sam Hatton on the other side of the area. The young midfielder clipped the ball back into the danger area and Webb bundled the ball past Worgan for 2-1.

From then on there would only be one winner. Main teed up De Bolla who speculated from 25 yards but saw his attempt swerve away from the left hand post as it travelled.

Moments later, Hatton’s high quality cameo appearance was capped with a fine sliding tackle that set Michael Haswell on his way to sewing up the result. The full back delivered an early cross from deep that the 'Us' couldn’t clear and Webb ghosted in to somehow drill his shot through a sea of defenders before it ricocheted off the goalkeeper and nestled in the back of the net, confirming that Terry Brown’s side would take the points and climb to third in the table.

The FA Trophy (Third Qualifying Round)
Изображение

Another break from league action with a third qualifying round FA Trophy tie at home to Ryman Division One side Northwood. With new signing Jon Main Trophy-tied for this game, this surely represents an important afternoon for Steve Ferguson.

Against Hastings Brown revealed that Fergie was to be the designated stander down to make way for Main and you can see his thinking, exacerbated by the lack of product from all those bold runs down the right wing, tired of seeing Fergie staring up into the sky, his face racked with agony and self loathing as yet another heavy touch has sent the ball spiralling away into touch or has surrendered possession.

But it`s a shame because what he lacks in effectiveness he makes up for in excitement. There`s nothing quite so thrilling as seeing Little bowling the ball out to Ferguson on the flank midway between the penalty area and the halfway line and for him to look up, with the ball fizzling at his feet, and see a bit of space in front of him and decide Sod it, lets have a run at them. Experience tells you that it won`t get anywhere but your heart just gets wrapped up in to the empty excitement of it all as he zig zags down the pitch.

He really fills up the length of his flank. His work rate and presence was missed down the right against Hastings. Finn`s jinky skills were the most impressive part of the performance but he did leave Garrard exposed at right back, and not through lack of effort either.

Fergie`s return and De Bolla`s move in off the left flank should ensure that Main isn`t missed too much on Saturday. Of more concern is the keeping position as I`ve yet to read a definitive answer as to whether loan signing Knowles is available to play on Saturday. I think the assumption is that he will be. If not though were down to either Ben Symons, who made a right Scott Carson of his debut against Tonbridge, or reserve team lad Elliot Ransom

The boys from Chestnut Avenue.

Despite the FA Trophy run it`s been a struggle so far this season with them down in 18th place in the league. It was a great result overcoming Hornchurch 3-1 in a replay in the last round and they followed that up with victory over second place AFC Sudbury in the league.

But they lost their last league game 2-0 at home in the league to Aveley. (An under strength team also went down 5-1 away in the Middlesex Charity Cup to Harefield.)

Main danger man is teenage striker Elliott Buchanan who`s got 6 in the last 5 games. Colin Payne`s side also seems to have keeping problems and are currently relying on two loan signings between the posts - Mitch Swain from Barnet is first choice with Wealdstone`s Danny Hart offering cover.

Their preparations have been hit by the weather with their league fixture against Wingate and Finchley lost to a waterlogged pitch.

The FA Trophy (Third Qualifying Round)

Wimbledon 2:1 Northwood
( 0:1 Elliott Buchanan 1` | 1:1 Samuel Hatton 50` | 2:1 Jake Leberl 67`)

By Big Tissue

The Dons take their FA Trophy unbeaten run to nine games despite conceding to Division One Northwood after 50 seconds of the kick off. They recovered in the second half thanks to a close range finish from Hatton and a glorious header from a corner by Jake Leberl.

Изображение

The Wood were bright and lively going forward but remedial and sluggish at the back and never really cottoned on to the idea that that sneaky De Bolla was playing not quite a forward and not quite as a midfielder. As a result he had plenty of chances to run with the ball at his feet and play those intricate close range passes that are his specialities in and he ended up getting the Man of the Match award.

It says something for the impact he's made that after just a few months at the club he already risen up to the level of Howard and Goodliffe as a safe choice for the MOTM award when nobody's played an obvious blinder.

Take it to the Wayne Bridge.

The Dons got their fiasco out of the way early, gifting them a goal in the first minute. A long ball into the corner of the area, Knowles came sauntering out to collect as the defender left it and their top scorer Buchanan nipped in to prod the ball into an empty net.

Dons fans will be hoping that Little is back soon because hopes that Knowles would be safe pair of hands in his absence looked to be wishful thinking on today's showing. In the second half he'd make a couple more blunders - a loose throw out set up the Northwood attack; then Howard had to clear off the line after his header had just looped up straight up into the air.

Brown had made two changes to the side against Hastings, bringing back Ferguson (who would again be erratic) and replacing Quinn with Hatton in the centre of the park. Good to see young Samuel again but sadly in the first half in particular he had a bit of a Wayne, consistently perplexed and flustered by the arrival of the ball at his feet.

Slowly the Dons began to start forging chances and had wracked up over 10 attempts on goal by half time. The only ones of note though was a stinging De Bolla free kick that keeper Swain had to punch over the bar even though it was straight at him and a Goodliffe fumble at the far post connecting with Finn's cross that Swain was able to collect comfortably.

The early goal was like a Monty Python foot stamping out the atmosphere and the first 45 was quiet enough to be a lunch time kick off. Any hope that Webb's two goals may have earned him a respite from abuse was swiftly dashed by the Corridor of Discontent where he was quickly identified as the sure and certain cause of all our woes. They once spoke of Sarge in such terms - whatever happened to him?

Jake's progress.

Another half, almost another goal conceded in the first minute. This time striker ----found himself on the edge of the area with only the keeper to beat but steered his shot wide of the post.

1-1 Five minutes into the half the Dons levelled it. Finn's shot was blocked in the box, rebounded to Garrard whose cross skimmed off the top of Ferguson's head at the near post landing nicely for Hatton to stab in from no great distance at the far post.

The Dons attacked with more purpose now. A defender had to affect a great block to stop Webb scoring at the far post; Swain had to tip over a looping Hatton header though if he'd left it Webb would've been well placed to head home powerfully; Finn surged into the box down the right, skipped over a couple of late tackles before unleashing a fierce shot that Swain pushed wide.

2-1 Eventually, mid way through the half Leberl settled it. A De Bolla corner skimmed briskly over towards the near post where it was met with a forceful header by Jake. A really thrilling moment, so good Mr T on the PA originally credited it to Goodliffe, the traditional supplier of header goals from corners. There's something so perfect about the forceful conjunction of ball and forehead that can make it as exciting as a meeting of ball and foot from a much greater distance. Headers just seem that bit more thuggish.

Amazing really, the turnaround in his Dons career. Sullen and unloved when he was a positionally challenged, obsessively back passing centre half, keeping Frankie out of the team; the moment he was moved to central midfield everybody loved him (he even got to wear the Vinnie No 4 today.) He's the ball winner but he does it with some style. A cultured hooligan even his aimless lumps over the defence and towards the corner are precision placed aimless lumps over the defence and towards the corner.

The goal came just as Brown was preparing to bring Marcus Gayle on. Taking the lead didn't delay Gayle's entrance, though the ref did. Webb took such a time trudging slowly over to the side of the pitch that the ref allowed Northwood to kick off and he had to hastily return to the centre of the pitch before the change was made in the next break in play

So that's now into the first round proper, with ties to be played on the 15th and the draw to be made on Monday morning.

Dons - Knowles; Garrard, Howard, Goodliffe, Haswell; Ferguson, Leberl, Hatton, Finn (Beckford); De Bolla (Salmon); Webb (Gayle)

Ryman Premier League ( 01.12.2007 г. , 17:00 ч. )
Wimbledon vs Chelmsford

Venue: The Cherry Red Fans' Stadium Kick-Off: Saturday 3pm

CHELMSFORD might be flying high at the top of the Ryman Premier Division, but their away record has been patchy.

Their strong home form includes a 7-0 thrashing of Maidstone, but on their travels the Clarets have been less impressive.

Few will forget their 4-0 FA Trophy mauling by the Dons four weeks ago, butJeff King's men will be out for revenge, after being shocked by the nature of that defeat.

On their day, they are probably the best team in the league, but the club's fans still have reservations about their side's ability to grind out results.

King is known to view the Dons as his side's biggest challengers this season. TEAM NEWS: The Clarets have a number of selection headaches ahead of the game. Influential midfielder Jeff Minton is

suspended, as are Jon Keeling and Stuart Ainsley. Minton's ban comes after he was sent off in an Essex Senior Cup tie for stamping on an opponent. Kezie Ibe is almost certainly ruled out with a groin injury. Ben Chenery is a long-term absentee, also with a groin problem.

ONE TO WATCH: Ricky Holmes - the winger is being watched by a number of league clubs, and Peterborough have had a bid rejected. Has already scored 12 goals this season. Pacy, good in the air and a goal threat, the 20-year-old has a bright future.

LAST MEETING: AFC Wimbledon 4 Chelmsford 0, 03/11/07.

Legend Gayle returns

Изображение

MARCUS Gayle says he has undergone a full MOT - and has finally been given the green light to get his season under way.

The veteran striker returned to action on Saturday as a second-half substitute in the Dons' 2-1 FA Trophy defeat of Northwood.

The former Jamaica international, who played for Wimbledon FC between 1994 and 2001, playing 285 games and scoring 47 games, had only featured in one league game all season.

He has been ruled out for the majority of the five months he has been at the club since returning as Terry Brown's first Dons signing.

"I've had a full MOT and now I have to tick the engine over every morning and make sure it starts okay,"said Gayle.

"I've had three hamstring problems this season. It's been adjusted by having orthotics put in my shoes to keep the arches of my feet in line and that has a chain reaction in the rest of my body. That's what I've been struggling with for ages but I never knew."

Gayle's fightback from injury coincides with the arrival of new signing Jon Main.

The prolific former Tonbridge Angels hitman - who netted 52 times in 57 games for his former club - is expected to be one of the first names on Brown's teamsheet.

But Gayle insists he is capable of nailing down a first team place.

"I'm the best striker at the club," he said. "But that's just the confidence I have in myself.

"With strikers there are a few boxes to tick. Some are goalscorers, some are target men. In my career I've played with big strong strikers at Wimbledon like John Hartson. He's a big guy who could hold the ball up,bring people into play and pass the ball - he could do everything.

"There was Efan Ekoku, who was quick, and Dean Holdsworth, who was a brilliant finisher with both feet. I've outlasted all of them at this club, maybe because I could do more than all of them. I had a bit of speed, I could head the ball, I could hold it and I could score.

"I've always tried to be the complete striker and that's why I've been able to play right across the front line."

Gayle played 120 minutes in defence for the Dons in their midweek Surrey Senior Cup defeat by Whyteleafe, and will now be pushing for inclusion against league leaders Chelmsford tomorrow.

"I've been out for a long while but I'm looking to a positive future, however long that may last,"he said.

"I need more game time to get match sharpness, sort my touch out and get back into the groove of things.

"I haven't got a honeymoon period and I'm not expecting an easy time.I'm expecting to be involved and for myself to produce straight away.

"I've had to play a few games in the reserves and it's been good. I was getting some chances and hitting the target. I can get into the box, I can sprint and I'm happy with that.

"I was a bit down earlier in the season, but I was over that very quickly. I didn't want to drag my heels and be a negative influence. I want to have an impact and now I'm 100 per cent mentally and physically, I'm looking forward to doing that.

"I'm in direct competition with four or five people but I can play in four positions.

I'm versatile enough so it doesn't matter who's out there, the manager knows I can play centre-half, in midfield or up front. I'm still working up to full fitness and I don't know about 90 minutes twice a week, but I've done enough mileage in my career to know I can do enough damage in 60 or 70 minutes of a game to make a difference.

"I'll get as fit as I can for my own game - I don't need to be a whippet out on the pitch getting in channels.

"I'm not the fittest person here but it doesn't take away what's in my head, when to go, when not to go. I'll get around the pitch the best I can, and I won't look like I'm the least fit person out there. I'm here to just pay back some time to the club, in whatever capacity and in whatever position. I just want to be part of the best of Wimbledon this year."

Arsenal coach has big plans for Dons role

Изображение

THE Dons' new reserve team boss Ryan Gordon was given his first chance in coaching by Harry Redknapp - and is now hoping to add the values of another Premier League manager to the Dons set-up.

Gordon was recently appointed to the Kingsmeadow coaching staff, and will combine the position with his role as an academy coach at Arsenal.

And Gordon has promised to implement Arsene Wenger's footballing philosophy to help improve the young players coming through the Wimbledon ranks.

"My main job is to develop the players at the club so that they are good enough to play for the first team,"said Gordon.

"There are seven or eight players here who are definitely capable of making that step up in the future. Wimbledon have a very bright future.

"It's important that we have a youth structure which allows progression, and enables the young players, like Luke Pigden who played the other night, to see that they have a chance of making it into the first-team.

"We'll play football the right way and we'll be entertaining.I want to establish a learning culture with the right ethos. It shouldn't always be about winning with younger players - it should be about performance and creating better players.

"When I took over a few weeks ago I asked the players to be patient and to be willing to learn. A number of them played for the senior team on Tuesday night against Whyteleafe, and already they're beginning to see some reward for all their hard work."

Gordon works with 6-16 year-olds at Arsenal in what is considered to be one of the best youth structures in the country."There are some brilliant young players at Arsenal," he said. "But there are some very promising players here as well. The pro clubs tend to get the pick of who they want, but after that Wimbledon should be the next port of call for youngsters in this area, because it's a great club and it can offer them exciting opportunities."

Ryman Premier League ( 01.12.2007 г. , 17:00 ч. )
Wimbledon 0:1 Chelmsford

Изображение

AFC Wimbledon’s long unbeaten league run came to end against Chelmsford City, with the Essex side smashing and grabbing a late winner to extend their margin over the Dons to 13 points. Substitute Kezie Ibe dealt the fatal blow on 81 minutes, driving the ball past Danny Knowles into the top right-hand corner. The best opportunity to level fell to Jason Goodliffe in the closing stages, but his fine effort cannoned off the inside of the post and away to safety.

In truth it was a match that neither side looked much like winning, with plenty of endeavour on display but little that could be deemed quality. Chances were at a premium as both defensive lines dominated. The game seemed to hinge on two substitutions, one by each manager, midway through the second half. It was Jeff King’s that paid off.

The mood had been so upbeat at 2.59 pm. A crowd of 3,124 had turned up to see what was billed as a ‘title six-pointer’ with Terry Brown calling it a “must win” game. Dons’ hopes were high following the recent FA Trophy meeting with Chelmsford and fans were keen to see the men in blue make up some ground on their rivals’ impressive start to the campaign.

Terry Brown gave a home debut to new striker Jon Main, while Rob Quinn returned to the centre of midfield. Sam Hatton and Steve Ferguson started on the bench, with the manager able to call on a strong sixteen-man squad which included Marcus Gayle and Mark Beard. Although the Dons lined up 4-4-2 it soon became clear that Jake Leberl and Quinn would compete in midfield with Mark De Bolla playing a free role in front of them. Tony Finn took his usual position, wide on the left.

Chelmsford’s stock was somewhat depleted with five first-teamers missing. Ben Chenery wouldn’t make the squad; while Mario Noto and Ibe were only deemed fit enough for the dugout. Jeff Minton, Stuart Ainsley and John Keeling were all serving suspensions.

Both sides probed for an early opening without testing the keepers. Ricky Holmes looked lively down Chelmsford’s left as Luke Garrard was isolated without a recognised right-sided player in front of him. Garrard was then replaced on 18 minutes with a nagging injury he’d picked up at the start of the match. Mark Beard came on in a like-for-like swap.

It wasn’t difficult to see why so many Clarets had been ruled out of this contest. They instantly adopted a physical approach and both Ollie Berquez and Bertie Brayley were booked inside half an hour for challenges that had little to do with winning the ball. But the visitors were organised and resilient. Their four big defenders seemed to regard the Dons attack as a minor irritant rather than a major problem, even if they didn’t particularly enjoy the aerial battle with Daniel Webb.

Holmes and James Lawson engineered the first meaningful attempt on goal squeezing the ball into the box for Brayley to run on to. Danny Knowles was sharp off his line to smother the danger.

Jamie England then hit a low drive from 20 yards that Knowles parried low to his left. Brayley raced in for the rebound but the Dons’ keeper recovered to kick into touch.

The hosts had to wait until the second half for their first significant raid on the Chelmsford goal. Jon Main’s classy first touch on the halfway line spun him away from Spencer Knight. He attacked the left side of the area, cut inside and blasted wide of the far post.

On 58 minutes Brayley was able to turn in the box and squeeze away his shot, but Goodliffe got enough of his body in the way for the ball to loop up into the keeper’s arms.

Sixty seconds later Webb was replaced by Steve Ferguson as the Dons’ chief hoped to pick apart the commanding Clarets’ back four with pace rather than aerial presence. Eight minutes later, Jeff King sent accomplished finisher Ibe on for Brayley.

Wimbledon continued to push forward. Antony Howard just failed to connect with De Bolla’s free-kick delivery from the right and the ball was scrambled away for a corner. Rob Quinn then found himself unmarked in the six yard box but lost the flight of the ball and it ran harmlessly through to keeper Danny Gay.

More Chelmsford bookings followed for Holmes and Knight as Chelmsford looked to keep it tight for the remaining quarter. There was increasingly less to trouble Andy Duncan and Steve Ward at the heart of the Clarets’ defence, so the visitors started to push forward, moving the ball well and asking questions of the Dons’ stamina and concentration.

Ricky Holmes broke at pace down the left with the Wimbledon defence back tracking after another wasted set-piece. With a three-on-two situation, Ollie Berquez inexplicably ran into an offside position and tossed away a great chance to put his side ahead.

But moments later the league leaders broke the deadlock. Holmes received the ball into feet on the edge of the box, flicked it on to Ibe racing past him and the Chelmsford marksman drilled the ball past Knowles, just nine minutes from the end.

Terry Brown played his final card, sending Marcus Gayle on in an attempt to try and salvage something from the game.

With a minute left on the clock, Leberl’s deep cross from the left was cushioned into the path of Goodliffe on the edge of the box. The Dons centre-half couldn’t have caught the ball any cleaner and it whisked through a crowd of defenders, only to crash off the foot of the upright and rebound to safety.

The referee allowed plenty of stoppage time but it never looked like being enough. Bad decision-making under pressure, poor dead ball delivery and a lack of ideas in the attacking third would define Wimbledon’s afternoon as Chelmsford – who came for one point – left the Cherry Red Records Fans’ Stadium with all three.

Meanwhile in the Ryman League Premier, Hendon were thrashing Folkestone Invicta 4-0 at the Buzzlines stadium, leaving Dons fans to contemplate a title race that is still very much open, but wondering whether it will still involve their side come April.

FA Trophy (First Round Proper)
Maidenhead vs Wimbledon

Еврофутбол:
A345..........МЕЙДЪНХЕД - АФК УИМБЪЛДЪН.........1.90.....3.25.....2.55
(Моя прогноза - Х2 , като повече клони към 2  )

MAIDENHEAD will be looking to avoid a double dose of Dons defeats after the Blue Square South side were dumped out of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup 4-1 by MK Dons on Tuesday, writes James Curtis.

The Magpies will fancy their chances in Saturday's tie, despite having only won four league games this season.

Manager Johnson Hippolyte has a history of cup success, having guided former club Yeading to an FA Cup third round tie against Newcastle United in 2004, and taking Maidenhead to the first round proper for the last two years.

Hippolyte has called on Reading and Wycombe fans to help fill York Road and drum up some atmosphere as the 2003-04 quarter-finalists look to enjoy another successful cup run.

The Magpies will have a good idea of what to expect from Wimbledon, because midfielder Wes Daly made 100 appearances for the Dons before moving to York Road along with defender Lee Kersey.

TEAM NEWS: Midfielder Dwane Lee is expected to feature after recovering from a slight knock against MK Dons. Striker Lee Newman and utility man Bobby Behzadi are still missing with long-term injuries.

ONE TO WATCH: John Hastings - the on-loan MK Dons striker has been cleared to play for the Magpies in the Trophy. The 23-year-old scored 54 goals in 84 games for former club Tooting & Mitcham.

DID YOU KNOW? York Road is officially the oldest continually used ground in the world. Maidenhead hosted Marlow in the first game played there on February 16 1871.

FA Trophy (Second Round Proper)
Tonbridge / Oxford vs Wimbledon

Terry on Saturday's win and the Trophy draw
Изображение

Terry Brown was very positive following Saturday's convincing win at Maidenhead in the FA Trophy, first round.

"I felt Saturday's result was very important for the group of players we have at the club. We went through against a side in the league above us and turned in the sort of away performance that we will need to reproduce over the coming months if we are to gain promotion this year.

"I thought our first half performance was very professional and solid and we gave the home opposition only one sniff at goal. The slope at Maidenhead makes it difficult to get out of your half and we thought that if we could go in with a clean sheet at half time it would enable us to push on in the second half.

"We started the second half very brightly, pushing our full backs on and therefore allowing us to push our forwards up to support a very hard working Marcus Gayle. As soon as we started to release Fergie behind their full back we were rewarded with a fine Marcus Gayle header. I think the game was effectively sewn up with Antony Howard's set-piece header and we continued to look dangerous without ever bringing our scoring boots with us.

"We were also able to introduce Richard Jolly back into the first team and with the addition of a now fully-fit Marcus Gayle, it gives me the sort of interesting headaches that any manager would like. We go into the Christmas with the strongest squad we have had available all year.

"Today's draw unfortunately gives us an away fixture against either Tonbridge Angels or Oxford and I certainly wouldn't rule Tonbridge out of the equation. The competition is starting to get interesting now, with only 32 sides left in it, and several of the top flight conference teams will be playing each other.

"As a club we believe we have the capability of winning this competition (after all we are unbeaten in it for two years) but the game will be a difficult one to negotiate, whoever our opposition may be."

Gayle praised as Dons go through

AFC Wimbledon manager Terry Brown praised Marcus Gayle after the veteran forward scored in their 2-0 FA Trophy first round victory at Maidstone.

"We beat a good side, although I'd have liked to have seen us take a greater percentage of the chances," Brown said.

Dons leave Staines on the floor in a 5-2 thriller

Wimbledon's players answered Terry Brown's Boxing Day charge that they needed to show more commitment by scoring five goals, away from home, against one of the league's leading teams. And this after falling behind within the first five minutes when goalkeeper Knowles tried to slide the ball to safety and was judged by the referee to have brought down a Staines player as he did so. Former Don Lewis Cook put the penalty away convincingly.

The Dons came back with power and style and first Beckford and then Beard took their chances well, before Nwokeji equalised to take the game into the break at 2-2.

In the second half, Staines were unable to take advantage of the strong wind and Wimbledon simply brushed them aside with apparent ease. The third and fifth goals were left-footed shots by Ferguson, both of them a contender for goal of the month, with a Jon Main penalty squeezed in between, thanks to a rather dubious decision, apparently made by the assistant referee.

Terry Brown was keeping a level head after the game and said "today we took our chances and we've not done that often enough this season But what really impressed me was that this performance was produced by a team with half of the players struggling from a virus. I'm not giving away which ones they were and I defy anyone watching to work it out as this was a whole-hearted performance and exactly the response I was looking for after the Boxing Day game."

In the only New Year`s Ryman Premier game , AFC Wimbledon beat Hendon 3-2. The Wombles took the lead in the 28th minute when Jon Main converted a spot kick and the game seemed to go out of reach of the Greens when Tony Finn and Mark DeBolla scored in the 70th and 72nd minutes respectively. However, as has been seen on many occasions this season, Hendon never give up and were rewarded when Brian Haule headed home in the 78th minute. Five minutes later Scott Shulton was left unmarked 25 yards from goal and he lashed the ball home and deep into injury time the Greens nearly scored an equaliser when Lubo Guentchev's shot on the turn was headed off the line by Sam Hatton.
(В продължението на мача , един от българските играчи на Хендън Любомир Генчев замалко да изравни резултата , като стреля в горния десен ъгъл на вратата , но топката беше избита от голлинията )

Уимбълдън взе под наем за един месец вратар на Тотнъм

Terry Brown has signed 19 year old goalkeeper, Lee Butcher, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur for four weeks. He will go straight into the squad for the game against Maidstone United on Saturday.

As Terry explained, Danny Knowles’ loan period ended on 1 January and he has returned to Grays Athletic where he hopes to move on in the transfer window.

Lee, who is seen as a bright prospect, joined Tottenham from Arsenal during the summer of 2007. Previously, he had been a member of the Arsenal youth system since the age of 10. Last season he made his debut for the Arsenal under 18s, making 16 appearances for them in the Academy league. Lee is a full time professional with Tottenham and although now too old for their academy side has made a number of appearances for them. He has also been on the bench for the reserve side and the move is a great opportunity for him to gain experience from regular football.

Maidstone Utd. 1:2 Wimbledon
( 0:1 Mark De Bolla pen. 1` | 0:2 Tony Finn 10` | 1:2 Mo Takaloo 13` )

The Dons continued their fine run of form with a deserved victory over Maidstone.

A game which held the crowd’s interest throughout had an incident-packed start as Mark De Bolla converted a penalty after just two minutes, following a handball in the penalty area. A second soon after, when Tony Finn nodded in Jake Leberl’s header, appeared to put the Dons in a comfortable position, but Mo Takaloo quickly reduced the deficit.
Injuries to Rob Quinn and Leberl, the former being substituted, cautions for Anthony Howard and Mark Beard, and a red card for Daniel Webb, meant that you could not take your eyes off the game. Both teams ended up with 10 men when Conor Hagan was dismissed for the home team 10 minutes into the second half. Although the Dons had a few anxious moments, they created a number of goal scoring chances and should have increased the margin of victory.

Terry Brown was, not surprisingly, up-beat about the performance. “It was a fantastic win on another Saturday when we had to get all three points. It was a very hectic start and although we were quickly two goals ahead, we also suffered two early injuries which disrupted us. Quinn pulled a calf muscle and had to be replaced by Howard, who did well. Leberl suffered a cut on the ankle which will require stitches, but he battled on bravely.

“I was very pleased with Will Salmon who handled a tricky winger very well, and delighted with Lee Butcher who grew in confidence on his debut as the game progressed, and showed some good handling in the second half. At the time of the sending off, I knew we would have to grind out the result and made a number of tactical changes. Although Finn had scored a good goal, I knew that the pace of Steve Ferguson and Jon Main up front in the second half would allow the team to defend in depth. I was disappointed that we did not convert the three or four opportunities that we had in the second half to increase the lead”.

Finally, Terry spoke about the team’s discipline. “We have had a very good disciplinary record so far, but today I felt we let ourselves down and I was disappointed with Webb. It was a deserved red card. I have spoken to the player and will be dealing with the matter internally”.

Wimbledon chase FA Trophy dream
Изображение

AFC Wimbledon manager Terry Brown believes his side can continue their pursuit of a league and cup double by chasing promotion and the FA Trophy.

The Dons have moved into a challenging position in the Ryman Premier Division. And on Saturday they face a last-32 clash at league rivals Tonbridge Angels in the Trophy, with Brown setting his sights on further progress.

He told BBC Sport: "At the start of the season the priority was promotion, followed closely by the FA Cup and the FA Trophy. They were the three things we targeted. Ryman League clubs have not only got to the Trophy final before but have won it. We have a side that is more than capable of holding its own against Conference teams and our aim is to get to the last 16 if we can."

Wimbledon and Tonbridge are the two lowest-ranked sides left in the competition with the Angels currently struggling near the foot of the Ryman Premier table. However, despite Wimbledon's run of seven wins in their last eight games, Brown is taking nothing for granted, having drawn away at the Kent club in their last meeting in November. He added: "They have had a very good run in the Trophy, especially beating Oxford in the last round, so it should be a really exciting game."

Wimbledon will include a Trophy winner from last season in their side in ex-Stevenage midfielder Mark Beard, while striker Mark DeBolla was with Grays Athletic when they won the competition in 2006.

Wimbledon On The Wembley Trail

The draw for the last 16 of the FA Trophy has been made and there is no doubt about the standout tie- AFC Wimbledon host Blue Square Premier promotion chasers Torquay United.

Their progress actually started in the Second Qualifying Round and they have won four ties to reach this stage.

Though promotion is a priority this season- AFC lie 3rd in the Ryman Premier- there are those who see them as dark horses for the Trophy.

And if you like omens, it is 20 years since Wimbledon shocked the football worlds by not only reaching the FA Cup Final but despatching a star studded Liverpool squad to lift the prize.

In their ranks, AFC Wimbledon also have a link back to their Cup-fighting days as a League club. 37 year old Marcus Gayle has rejoined the club as defender.

In 1997, then playing as striker, he scored the only goal that knocked Manchester United out of the FA Cup as Wimbledon went all the way to the semi-finals.
