Atletico Madrid Football Club and Fernando Torres have reached an agreement to extend the contract of the first team captain. In addition to Torres, the Press conference will also be attended by Enrique Cerezo, President of Atletico Madrid Football Club.
It is an important day for Atletico and for all connected with the Club, given that Fernando is no ordinary player. Brought up through the ranks, ‘El Niño’ has been a symbol for the Club for a long time, both on and off the pitch. Ever since he burst into the first team squad, his advancement has been unparalleled and he is now a permanent feature in the national team. He is a icon for the rojiblanco family and an example for all the children who dream of one day playing in the Vicente Calderón.
Now 22, Fernando Torres has spent half his life in Atletico Madrid, arriving when he was just 11 years old. The rojiblanco has always preferred to play for his childhood Club despite many offers from big clubs throughout Europe.
The rojiblanco supporters can continue to enjoy his football, his talent, his speed and his moves. In short, one of the top players in the world, born and bred a rojiblanco, will be here to celebrate the title in Neptuno, as he always remembers the year of the double, which he experienced as a fan.
77 goals
El Niño has made spectacular progress since he arrived at Atletico. He was already a natural goal scorer in Rayo 13 de Fuenlabrada, the club he joined Atletico from, where he rose through the ranks as rapidly as the seasons went by. Hi sprogress did not go unnoticed by the national coaches, and he was soon playing for the international sides. He was European champion with the U16 side (2001) and again in 2002 with the U19 side, coming away from both as player of the tornament and top scorer.
At Atletico he has inspired the fans with his goals, ever since that far of day in May 2001, when he headed into the back of the net from an Iván Amaya cross. That day he scored against Albacete and ever since many, many teams have seen him put the ball away. In his 206 official games he has played in the rojiblanco shirt he has scored an enviable total of 77 goals, scoring his number 50 in the top flight on the 27th August against Racing Santander.
After playing a leading role in getting Atletico out of the ‘hell’ of the second division, Fernando Torres’ big objective is to see Atleti lift the title, and return the team from the Manzanares to European football.
